Ask three agencies what local SEO costs and you will get three very different answers, plus a lot of dodging. Some sell it for under a thousand rand a month. Some quote tens of thousands. Most will not show a price at all until you are on a call. We think that is backwards, so here is a plain guide to what local SEO actually costs in South Africa, what drives the price, and how to spot a deal that will waste your money.
What you are really paying for
Local SEO is not one thing. A fair price covers four areas of work. Your Google Business Profile, the local pages on your website, your listings and name, address and phone consistency across the web, and your reviews. Add the time to plan, report and keep it all current. When someone quotes you a price, ask which of these they actually do, because cheap quotes usually leave most of them out.
What drives the cost
- How competitive your area and industry are. A plumber in a busy suburb takes more work to rank than a niche service in a quiet town.
- How many areas you want to rank in. One suburb costs less than ten.
- How much content you need. More service pages and suburb pages cost more to build and maintain.
- The state you start in. A neglected profile and messy listings take more work to fix than a tidy starting point.
- How fast you want to move. More work each month means faster results and a higher price.
The honest price bands in South Africa
Under R1,500 a month. Usually too cheap to do real work. At this level you often get a profile touched once, a pile of low quality listings, and promises that do not hold. Many of these sell you a number of keywords rather than results.
R2,000 to R8,000 a month. The realistic range for most small and medium local businesses. Done properly, this covers the four areas, with real monthly work and reporting. Where you sit in this band depends on your area, your competition and how many suburbs you target.
R10,000 a month and up. For businesses with many locations, very competitive industries, or national reach. Useful for some, but far more than a single location local business needs.
Red flags to walk away from
- Page one in a week. Local SEO does not work that fast. Anyone promising it is not telling you the truth.
- A guarantee of the number one spot. Google decides local rankings on relevance, distance and prominence. Nobody can promise a position.
- Selling you a number of keywords. Real local SEO is about getting found and getting calls, not a keyword count.
- Long lock in contracts. If the work is good, you stay because it works, not because you are trapped.
- No reporting. If they cannot show you your rankings, calls and reviews each month, you cannot tell whether you are getting value.
What a fair plan looks like
You should get a complete, active Google Business Profile, local pages built for your area, clean and consistent listings, a steady flow of real reviews, a monthly report you can read, and a real person to talk to. You should be able to leave any month and keep everything, because your profile, your site and your content are yours.
